Grant going towards ‘Community Café’

Press Release

The Citizens for Backus/AB in International Falls are pleased to accept a $1,000 grant from the Diocese of Duluth and its Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl Small Grant Fund.
The grant will be used towards food purchases for the Backus Community Center’s “Community Café,” which is a joint project of Falls Hunger Coalition and Backus.
The mission statement guiding the “Community Café” is “dedicated to reducing hunger and building a stronger community.”
The “Community Café” serves free nutritious meals Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is open to anyone in the International Falls area who is experiencing food insecurity.
The “café” began in December, 2012 and has served more than 28,500 meals to people of all ages in the community.
On average, 60 meals are served at each “café,” with one-third of those feeding children.
Food is the main expense that the “café” has at an estimated cost of $10,000 per year.
The “café” helps serve a large need in the community and funding from grants such as the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl Grant always are greatly appreciated.
Along with grants, the program has thrived thanks to the volunteers and financial support from the community.
The “Community Café” is one of four food access programs that are co-sponsored on site by the Backus Community Center, along with numerous other programs and services that are available to community members.
Other food access programs aside from the “café” are the Backus Community Market, Summer Food Service Program, and Ruby’s Pantry.
