An information session on grain marketing is slated for Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Emo Inn.
John Prodaniuk, a grain merchant from Winnipeg, and Jim Doggett, an operations supervisor from Thunder Bay, will lead the presentation.
Both work for Richardson International, Canada’s largest agri-business.
Kim-Jo Bliss, a local agricultural researcher and producer, said grain numbers are on the rise in Rainy River District.
She noted more and more farmers are producing grain crops on the roughly 6,000 acres of tile-drained land in the area.
The Feb. 21 session is for local producers to learn how to market the crops they are growing or want to grow.
It also will be a chance for farmers to become more knowledgeable and comfortable with the business side of growing grains and cash crops.
Bliss has said this is not about telling farmers who to sell to; it is about learning how to market a grain crop.
Topics to be covered include:
•how/where Richardson International does business;
•commodity markets, futures, basis, and factors affecting price supply/demand;
•cash crop prices and how they are determined;
•crop sale contracts (i.e., how they are made and fulfilled);
•grading, discounts, moisture, and dockage;
•delivering to Richardson in Thunder Bay; and
•the 2017 marketing year outlook.
Those interested in attending can contact Bliss at 275-9706 or via e-mail at kimjobliss@gmail.com
An RSVP is not required but is appreciated.
Lunch will be provided.
