Gospel concert to help out soup kitchen

The New Beginnings Fellowship is planning a community barbecue and concert on Saturday, Sept. 9 in support of local soup kitchen David’s Deli.
The free event, taking place at 1301 Mill Rd. (across from La Place Rendez-Vous), will see children’s games starting at 4:30 p.m., followed by a barbecue at 6 p.m. and then an outdoor concert at 7 p.m. featuring Steve Tucker and Family from Duluth, Mn.
Pastor Sandy McEvoy, who shares the pastoral duties at New Beginnings Fellowship with Stephen and Carol-Leah Laing, said those who attend are highly encouraged to donate non-perishable food items, or make a cash donation, to help restock the soup kitchen’s shelves.
Food items required include canned goods, dry goods, margarine, and juice crystals.
Pastor McEvoy noted the purpose of the community concert also is to build awareness of David’s Deli, which has received much-appreciated support from various individuals, groups, and businesses since it opened its doors in the spring of 2002.
Donations from the local Kiwanis Club, for instance, have made this upcoming concert possible.

Pastor McEvoy also noted David’s Deli sees continued use, and will be expanding to serve lunch on Mondays, as well as Tuesdays and Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 11.
“It is getting busier,” she said, noting that, on average, David’s Deli feeds 20-25 each day it’s open, but more recently has been seeing up to 35 people at lunchtime.
“It will work well because the United Native Friendship Centre has a community soup kitchen on that fourth day [Thursday], so that means there’s something open four days in a row,” added Pastor McEvoy.
“We’re trying to work to having it for all five days eventually.”
For those who can’t make it out to the church for lunch on their own, pick-up is available from the corner of Portage Avenue and Church Street (by the Civic Centre) at noon on those days, and at 12:10 p.m. at the Couchiching seniors’ centre.
