The Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce reported a much better year financially in 2016 than the year before.
“It was a good year for the Chamber,” treasurer Mike Canfield told members attending the annual general meeting yesterday evening at La Place Rendez-Vous.
Canfield noted one major factor was the profit realized from special events.
The Chamber also reduced its operating expenses in 2016, he added.
On top of that, Canfield said “the early projections for 2017 look very promising.”
For instance, the business awards held Feb. 9 realized a profit of $5,500.
As well, early numbers indicate the 2017 Business & Community Expo held April 21-22 also was “a success from a financial and promotion standpoint.”
In other news, the Chamber board also passed a motion requesting the Town of Fort Frances either remove the faded banners on the mill building at the border or replace them with something new.
Meanwhile, the Chamber has applied to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. in the hopes of getting funds to hire a full-time, one-year intern.
“The Chamber believes this internship will provide a great learning experience for the right intern and also assist the Chamber in its day-to-day operations,” said executive director Jennifer Soderholm.
This would be in addition to applying for summer student funding.
