Gobeil rink off to police nationals

Local OPP officer Scott Gobeil and his rink are to off to Hamilton tonight for the 49th-annual Canadian Police Curling Championship.
The foursome—also including third Dave Priestly and second Scott Bell (both of the Winnipeg City Police) and lead Dennis Smith (Thunder Bay OPP)—had captured the Manitoba crown back in early February.
Action starts Sunday with the Gobeil first facing Nunavut, Yukon/Northwest Territories and then Team Canada.
The bonspiel, which is taking place at the Glendale Golf & Country Club, will run all week with the 12 rinks playing each other in a round-robin format.
The semi-finals and final will be held next Saturday.
Gobeil said this morning he’s hopeful his rink can bring home the trophy from the nationals after coming so close last year with a second-place finish behind Alberta.
Gobeil has been to the police nationals eight times representing Northern Ontario, but this is his first year leading Team Manitoba.
He made the switch because Northern Ontario did not hold a provincial championship this year.
