Two Fort Frances girls’ hockey teams crossed the river last weekend to play in tournaments–and they both brought home third-place showings.
In the under-10 division, the local squad downed Warroad 3-1 in the consolation final.
Lauren Pierce and Kali Hamilton (assisted by Haven Labbe) each scored to give Fort Frances a 2-0 lead midway through the first period.
After Warroad cut the gap to 2-1, Krystina Scott (Pierce/Labbe) regained the two-goal margin with just 30 seconds left in the opening period.
And that’s how it ended as neither two could score in the second and third periods.
Fort Frances had opened action with a tough 1-0 loss at the hands of host International Falls. But they got into the win column with a narrow 2-1 victory against Warroad.
Pierce once again got Fort Frances on the scoreboard first but Warroad netted the equalizer less than a minute later. Then Jessica Barker tallied the game-winning goal to put the team into the ‘A’ side.
But a 3-1 loss to the Falls (Katelyn Stearns got the lone goal) dropped the team into the consolation final against Warroard.
Meanwhile, Fort Frances had another strong showing in the under-15 division in the girls under 15 division, Fort Frances had another strong showing.
They made it to the consolation final against Baudette on Sunday morning and earned third place with a convincing 7-0 win.
The girls had opened the tournament with a narrow 1-0 win over Roseau despite being outshot 49-12 but they followed that with a tough 1-0 loss to International Falls.
Then they dropped down to the consolation final after losing to Roseau 1-0 on a goal that was scored with just 26 seconds to play.
