Garden contest winners saluted

It seems there are a lot of Fort Frances residents who aren’t afraid to get their knees dirty. And for five in particular, it paid off.
The local “Communities in Bloom” committee yesterday singled out five who showed particular skill and flair as the winners of its garden contest.
Each was recognized for a different type of garden, although in the case of vegetable gardens, the committee was unable to determine a clear winner and instead presented the award jointly to two people.
The winner for the best side/backyard and water garden was Bev Dawkins of 113 Sixth St. E. She also was voted as having the most improved display.
Chris and Nikki Wiedenhoeft of 405 Colonization Rd. E. were given the nod for their container gardens while Ann and Dave Ostby (346 Third St. W.) and Laurie Miller (831 Fifth St. E.) tied for the best vegetable garden.
Nick Wihnan of 827 Smith Ave. received the Award of Merit in recognition of his efforts in both his vegetable and ornamental gardens.
Each was presented with two hand-painted rocks to add to their displays, courtesy of Nadia Felix, Evelyn Goldamer, and members of the Fine Line Art Gallery, during a brief ceremony at the Civic Centre.
