With a wave of a wand and a spoken spell, the Fine Line Art Gallery co-op is starting to transform its Mowat Avenue location for its annual spring art show.
The theme of this year’s show is “Abracadabra,” and the public is encouraged to visit the gallery next week to check out the wonderful—and sometimes whimsical—wizardry on display.
The gallery also is requesting area artists conjure up some creative pieces in the next week or so (whether they be paintings, sculpture, stained-glass or anything in between), and participate in the mystical fun.
Co-op member Jean Richards said nearly 20 pieces have come in so far, but is hopeful more magically appear in a puff of smoke sooner than later.
Some of the entries are from new artists while others are by familiar artists from the Fine Line co-op. Still others, such former Fort Frances resident Linda Lovisa, are sending in their entries from afar.
The cost to enter is $10 (artists are limited to one work each). If the artist so desires, their piece will be for sale.
On average, the spring art show draws 40 entries each year.
Artists wanting to enter their work in the show should pick up an entry form at the Fine Line Art Gallery (529 Mowat Ave.) For more info, call 274-2242.
“Abracadabra” will wrap up with a “Music in the Gallery” open house on Saturday, May 5. More details on this evening of song and socializing will be revealed closer to that date.
Richards noted they are looking for entertainers for that open house that will fit the “Abracadabra” theme.
Last year’s theme was “Seeing Red,” following in the footsteps of the colour-themed “Shades of Yellow” in 2002 and “Out of the Blues” in 2004.
This has alternated with non-coloured themes such as “Cup and Dish” in 2005 and “Wild ’n Woolly” in 2003.
‘Cry of the Loon’
In other art news, the Fort Frances Museum is putting out a call for entries for the annual Rainy Lake Impression art exhibition, this year entitled “The Cry of the Loon.”
All works should be received by June 11, and they’ll be on exhibit from June 14-Sept. 30.
Original artwork, including three-dimensional pieces, will be accepted, as will photographs, fabric art, and written creative pieces.
All work must be ready to exhibit. An artist’s statement or description should accompany submissions.
Any pieces sold must give 20 percent to the museum.
The opening of this exhibition will coincide with the grand re-opening of the Fort Frances Museum. It also will run concurrently with a travelling exhibition about loons on loan from the Canadian Museum of Nature.
