French speech contest winners

Ryan McInerny and Katie-Lynn Bondett proved composing and speaking French well is as good as a trip to Toronto after taking top honours in their divisions at the “Concours d’art oratoire 2000” French speech contest last Tuesday at the Emo Inn.
McInerny, a student at the Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program, and Bondett, who attends St. Francis here, next will be heading to “Le concours/festival d’art oratoire” at York University on May 6 after both came in first in the Core French and French Immersion divisions respectively.
Flight cost and accommodations will be paid for by the local Canadian Parents for French.
McInerny was followed by Chelsea Derksen (St. Francis) and Tracy Treflin (St. Francis) while Laura Busch and Jennifer Green, both of St. Francis, finished behind Bondett.
All contestants received certificates and medallions for their efforts.
The contest was put on by the Northwest Catholic District School Board and Canadian Parents for French.
In related news, an English speech contest is slated May 9 at 7 p.m. at St. Michael’s School gym here. It will feature grade seven/eight students showing off their speech composition and delivery skills.
That competition is sponsored by the Rainy River District School Board, Elementary Teacher’s Federation of Ontario, and Ontario Elementary Catholic Teachers’ Association.
