Outdoor rinks
are now open

Local children and adults alike are invited to come out to a free community skate next Wednesday (Dec. 30) from 1-2:15 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Mayor Roy Avis is sponsoring the event, which also will feature free hot chocolate.
“I just thought it would be nice for the youth in this community to have the opportunity to skate,” the mayor noted.
“I just think it’s a good idea to try and build a positive momentum in the community for starting 2010.”
The skate is open to everyone and Mayor Avis also will be there—possibly along with other members of council.
In the meantime, local residents are encouraged to use the public outdoor rinks around town.
Community Services manager George Bell said the rinks opened Friday and will continue to be open daily from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. throughout the winter (weather permitting).
He added the public is welcome to clear snow off the rinks if they need to, adding there should be shovels available in the rink shacks.
Also at Monday night’s meeting, council:
•appointed Sylvie Langevin-Matthews to the Committee of Adjustment for a period ending Nov. 30, 2010;
•authorized the renewal of a five-year lease agreement with Vianet, at a rate of $2,968.68 (plus taxes), for space on the water tower;
•received a report on semi-annual testing of lead in the water distribution system (the favourable test results indicate that in the new year, the town will be able to halve its number of tests per period from 50 to 25);
•approved a revised winter control operations policy;
•approved a report, and directed the clerk to prepare an appropriate bylaw, to authorize an agreement with Paul Heayn and to provide for the renewal of his appointment as meeting investigator effective Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2010;
•authorized the transfer of any year-end surplus in excess of $25,000 to the Corporate Project Reserve Fund, Corporate Vehicles & Equipment Reserve Fund, and the Corporate Building Reserve Fund;
•authorized the treasurer to approve the most favourable terms as at Dec. 22, 2009 for a bank loan to finance the 2009 capital equipment and projects in the amount of $859,640, and that an authorize bylaw be prepared; and
•referred a request from the Economic Development Advisory Committee re: the formation of a proposed Economic Development Commission to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation.
