A peculiar sight was witnessed by many Fort Frances residents on Christmas Eve: a tall man standing in front of Brockie’s Jewellers holding a homemade sign that simply read “free hugs.”
“This was the first time I’ve done this and it was a lot of fun seeing people’s reactions,” said Craig Brockie, the sign bearer. “Most people saw the sign while driving by and either smiled, giggled, or beeped their horn.
“A few stopped for a hug, but most of my free hug recipients were pedestrians,” he added.
The “free hugs” story began in Sydney, Australia with one man, Juan Mann. And in just under three years, the “free hugs” campaign has become a worldwide phenomenon that’s touched millions of people.
Since a popular music video was produced featuring Mann, the story has been featured in newspapers and television programs around the globe.
Mann even has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show sharing his story.
Brockie was in town visiting family and upgrading the Energy Enhancement System healing technology at The Brockie Wellness Centre here.
“I’m only here a short time, and the ‘free hugs’ idea seemed like the best way to reach the most people,” he reasoned. “In just two hours, I saw hundreds of smiles and had about 30 takers on the free hugs.
“It’s a great way to practise random acts of kindness and I encourage anyone to try it. It feels great!” Brockie enthused.
