Fort man killed in accident

A Fort Frances man was killed in a two-vehicle accident around 1:30 p.m. yesterday on Highway 11 that also left a Fort Frances woman with life-threatening injuries, Emo OPP reported.
Michael J. Cressey, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred about five km east of the Highway 502 junction, police said.
Cressey was driving westbound when he lost control, skidded sideways into the eastbound lanes, and then was struck by an eastbound car, police said.
His vehicle came to rest on the south shoulder of the highway.
The occupants of the eastbound vehicle both were taken to La Verendrye Hospital, where the driver, Waldon W. Spencer of Seine River FNT, was treated and released, Emo OPP reported.
The passenger, Gloria Johnson, 39, of Fort Frances, was airlifted to Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg with life-threatening injuries, police added.
Highway 11 was closed for six hours because of the accident, re-opening around 7:45 p.m. yesterday.
The accident remains under investigation, police said.
