Fort High students sign ‘Contract for Life’

Besides eating, chatting with friends, and maybe doing a little homework during lunch hour Tuesday, some Fort High students were making a statement by making a promise.
Called a “Contract for Life,” students were stopping by the foyer at the high school to sign it, and by doing so, making a promise to adopt a responsible attitude with regards to drinking and driving.
“It’s part of a one-day national campaign among groups like [Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving] to raise awareness of drinking and driving,” said Madonna Ring, co-president of the local OSAID chapter.
Ring was surprised to see nearly 50 teens sign up during the lunch hour.
The statement reads, “I agree to call you for advice and/or transportation at any hour from any place if I am ever faced with a situation where a driver has been drinking.
“I promise you, as your friend, to never drink and drive.”
Then, the student gets a friend to sign under a statement which reads, “I agree to come and get you at any hour, any place, no questions asked. I take your promise as a contract for life that you, as my friend, will never break.
“I agree to seek safe, sober transportation home if I am ever in a situation where I have had too much to drink or a friend who is driving me has had too much to drink.”
“I signed it because I feel very responsible,” said Nicole Pochailo. Ring signed on as her friend.
