In preparation for their post-secondary education, Fort High students will get a chance to learn about what’s out there for them at the Ontario college tour Friday and university one Monday.
And if and when students do decide, they’ll all be applying to schools a little differently this year–through the Internet.
“We are not going to have hard copy for our kids to do this year,” Mary Jane Gushulak, co-ordinator of student services, said Wednesday.
“Instead, we download all our demographics and grades to the Ontario College Application Centre and the Ontario University Application centre.
“They send a PIN [personal identification number] back to the students. Then students go and do their applications on-line,” she explained.
Gushulak noted students will get a tutorial on how to apply sometime next month. The deadline to apply to an Ontario university is Dec. 19 while the deadline for colleges is Jan. 15.
“We’re gong to have them all done by Christmas break,” said Gushulak, adding the high school expects about 70 applications to Ontario universities and 70 to provincial colleges.
The Rainy River District School Board is one of only five across the province participating in this pilot study, which Gushulak said was spurred on by the “double cohort” of graduates (grade 12 and OAC) that will be attending post-secondary institutes in the fall of 2003.
Gushulak noted the tours, which run from 8:45-10:15 a.m. tomorrow and from 2-3:15 p.m. on Monday in the small gym, will see more traffic than usual.
“Grade 11s will be attending the tours because they’ll be graduating after next year,” she said, referring to the elimination of OAC.
The tours also are open to the public.
“I can’t emphasize enough to parents that if they’re worried about the ‘double cohort’ and there not being enough room in programs, come and talk to the presenters,” Gushulak stressed.
Eight Ontario colleges and all 16 universities will be represented at the tours here.
