Last September, HGTV announced it was looking for extraordinary Canadian small towns to showcase their hometown pride and star in a new series called Home Town Takeover Canada, inspired by the popular U.S. show Home Town Takeover produced by RTR Media. Although the town has yet to be selected, production is scheduled to begin this year, with the show premiering the following autumn or winter, and Fort Frances is one step closer to making the big time.
“Home Town Takeover Canada represents a transformative opportunity for small towns across the nation, particularly for communities like Fort Fances,” said Kaleb Firth, Fort Frances’ town councillor and the pointman for Fort Frances’ application.
“Notably, Fort Frances garnered significant attention, with its video amassing over 80,000 views.”
It was Firth’s accountant who originally told him of the opportunity to apply for the HGTV show. Seeing potential in getting the town in the show’s sights, Firth began the application process, which included producing a video to showcase the community to the production team. The Municipal Accommodation Tax also helped with funding for editing the video footage.
The end goal, Firth said, is to get more eyes on Fort Frances, and all of the benefits that come with it.
“My base goal is national attention,” said Firth.
“It presents a complete game changer in energy, focus, and attraction.”
According to an article from Rogers Sports & Media, the show aims to “spark a nationwide small town revitalization movement” by showcasing the chosen community’s heart and resilience focused through the lens of of locals and their stories. Applicants needed to have a population of less than 20,000, as well as a video and a series of photos to showcase the town’s spirit and locations that need the most love.
“As of November 20, RTR Media conveyed their appreciation for the patience exhibited by all applicants as they meticulously review all submissions,” said Firth. “In an era where small towns face a myriad of challenges, Home Town Takeover Canada could serve as a catalyst for positive change, enabling communities to rethink their potential and embark on a path towards revitalization and sustained growth.”
Other towns with notable applications include Blind River, Kenora, West Nipissing, and Port Alberni. The show’s host and broadcasting details will be announced this year along with the town chosen for the takeover.
