Five new forest fires were reported in the Northwest Region by late afternoon yesterday.
All occurred in Sioux Lookout District and remain active as of last report.
They range in size from 0.1 to three hectares, with three confirmed to have been started by lightning.
The forest fire hazard is “high” to “extreme” across most of the region, with high winds forecast to come into the region ahead of a storm system.
This may result in more extreme fire behaviour under windy conditions.
Meanwhile, smoke continues to drift into the region in the Kenora, Fort Frances, and Dryden areas from large fires burning in northern and western Canada, as well as in the U.S.
Smoky conditions likely will persist until weather patterns change.
