A total of five tenders were submitted Tuesday afternoon to refurbish and relocate the Hallett and lookout tower as part of the Phase II of the Heritage Tourism Project on the waterfront.
Tom Jones Corp. submitted a bid for $1,220,415 while Man-Shield Construction Inc. submitted a bid for $1,808,606.26.
Woodbridge Constructors Inc. put in a bid for $1,571,850 while George Armstrong Co. Ltd. offered to do it for $1,359,850.
Sachetti Construction submitted a bid for $2,239,020.
The bids will be reviewed prior to any decisions being made as part of the 2009 budget process.
The work has been budgeted for about $1.2 million.
If it goes ahead, the work will entail moving and refurbishing the Hallett and lookout tower from their Pither’s Point Park locations.
The lookout tower will be placed to the east of the Sorting Gap Marina, fixed up, and re-opened so visitors once again can climb its stairs and get a bird’s eye view of the river and surrounding area.
The Hallett, meanwhile, will be moved into the upper Rainy River to the west of the boat launch.
There also will be additional landscaping.
Phase II of the Heritage Tourism Project, as a whole, also includes new signage and interpretive panels.
Town council awarded the contract for the design, fabrication, and installation of signage and interpretive panels to Dutka Signs of Atikokan back in February.
But that contract has a proviso stating it could be modified or even cancelled down the road—depending on the costs of the tenders that come in for other aspects of the Heritage Tourism Project, such as the Hallett and lookout tower relocation.
