FITS queen pageant to go ahead

With the deadline to enter elapsing Thursday, the Miss “Fun in the Sun” pageant will take place once again this summer.
Organizer Melissa Gushulak reported Thursday evening that she has four confirmed contestants to vie for the crown, as well as a possible fifth who still needs a sponsor.
“They’re all pretty interested in doing it, so even if we just have the four, we’re going ahead with it,” said Gushulak.
But she added she’d still like to see at least five young women participate this year, and noted any business interested in sponsoring the fifth contestant can give her a call at 274-5206.
Sponsorship is $300, but this can be split between one or more businesses, if they so choose. In return, the contestant wears a banner with their sponsor’s name on it and promotes their sponsor at every event they attend.
The four confirmed contestants, and their sponsors, include Sydney Boustead (MacDonald Motors), Rachel Dutton (Lowey’s Greenhouses), Danielle Payne (Lakewood Tire), and Holly Strain (Shopper’s Drug Mart).
The contestants will attend a meeting with Gushulak tonight to start planning the activities they’ll be participating in over the next month-and-a-half, as well as come up with a theme.
“Their schedules are going to be jam-packed, for sure,” said Gushulak.
Contestants will be making their banners within the next week, then appearing on-air on B93•FM on May 23-25.
Other events they’ll be organizing or otherwise attending include a garage and bake sale, a car wash, an entertainment night, the classic car “Show ’n Shine” (June 16), the BIA’s “Mall Days” (June 28), the Fort Frances Public Library’s “Teddy Bear Picnic” (June 29), and the July 1 parade and picnic basket auction.
Gushulak said it’s still being decided as to whether contestants will be selling buttons this year.
Being her second year heading up the FITS pageant, Gushulak said she’s “looking forward to another busy, hectic summer.”
“I’m excited. Hopefully, they’re excited,” she laughed.
