A new Fun in the Sun queen will be crowned July 1, a pageant organizer confirmed Monday morning.
“It is a go,” said Dawn Booth, who is co-organizing this year’s event with Melissa Gushulak and Cheryl Hoard.
The future of the annual pageant was up in the air after only three candidates had registered prior to the May 27 deadline.
But organizers chose to push the application date back one week (to June 3) because several other teens had picked up registration forms.
Monday morning, Booth said five had registered—and one more was expected to do so by the end of the day.
Last week, Booth told the Times at least five or six participants would be needed to make it worthwhile to stage the pageant.
The FITS queen and two princesses will be crowned Canada Day (July 1). Those vying to be FITS royalty also will take part in a variety of events leading up to the crowning.
Pageant organizers are meeting with all the candidates Monday evening, Booth noting, adding more details will be available after that.
Five contestants vied for the FITS queen crown last year—an honour eventually bestowed on Alyssa Bruyere. Shana Morrison was named First Princess while Erika Johnson was the Second Princess.
Registrants for the pageant must be girls aged 15-19 and residents of Rainy River District.
