Got a child just starting school who may have concerns about riding the bus every day?
Well, the Rainy River District School Board, Northwest Catholic District School Board, and Bus Operators Safety Committee have organized two sessions for parents and their young children to attend to not only get acquainted with riding a bus and having any of their fears assuaged, but to learn about safety, too.
These will take place Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. at Riverview School in Rainy River and again Thursday, Aug. 28 at 9:30 a.m. at Robert Moore School here in Fort Frances.
If there’s an overwhelming demand, more sessions could be scheduled.
“The beginning of the school year is exciting for children and we want to make it safe as well,” Darlene Madill, transportation officer for the local public school board, noted yesterday.
“We want to make sure that children are comfortable with riding on the school bus, that they know the rules for getting on and off, and for travelling on the bus.
“The program provides the opportunity for children and parents to learn about the routines for safe school bus travel so that they are prepared for that first bus ride to school,” she added.
The sessions will run about 40 minutes, and will include a 15-minute video, an explanation of bus safety rules, the opportunity for children to ask questions, information for parents to take home, and even a ride on a bus to show the children there’s nothing to fear.
To reserve a spot for your child at one of these sessions, call Madill at 274-9855, ext. 232 by Thursday, Aug. 21.
