The 2012 Barn Concert season at Cornell Farms begins next Tuesday (June 12) at 7:30 p.m. when singer, songwriter, and guitarist extraordinaire Kim Churchill will be the headliner.
Churchill is one of Australia’s best-kept secrets. His style is explosive, with intricate finger-picking, percussive beats on the body of the guitar, and two-hand tapping.
Combined with an earthy stomp-box, harmonica, powerful melodies, and a soulful voice, it’s hard to believe he’s only 21.
Since beginning his musical career in 2009, Churchill has won the Australia National Youth Folk Artist of the Year Award and performed on the Byron Bay Bluesfest main stage.
Kim Cornell is extremely pleased to have such a great performer in the barn.
“We are excited to be part of Kim’s Canadian tour to promote his second album,” Cornell said.
“He is one of those performers people will be talking about for years to come–he’s that good.
“When Harry Manx opens for Kim Churchill, you know that his star is on the rise,” Cornell added.
According to the Gateway newspaper at the University of Alberta, “Kim Churchill is proof that having a band to back you up can be overrated . . . he’s a one-man music machine.”
Besides performing at Cornell Farms, Churchill’s Canadian tour will include the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Open Skies Festival in Edmonton, the Canmore Folk Festival, and the Live From the Rock Folk Festival in Red Rock.
Fellow Australian Benjalu will be opening for Churchill. A force of his own, Benjalu is described as being a combination between folk, roots, and reggae.
It certainly promises to be an entertaining evening.
Tickets cost $15 in advance—available at the Fort Frances Public Library, the Clover Valley Farmers’ Market, Greensides Store in Devlin, and Cornell Farms—and $18 at the door.
Cornell Farms is located on La Vallee Road North, about one kilometre north of Highway 11/71.
