The Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Service was dispatched to the AbitibiBowater mill here around 3:45 p.m. yesterday in response to a fire alarm after an overheated steam line apparently caused a small blaze there.
Chief Gerry Armstrong said the fire had been extinguished by mill staff before firefighters arrived on the scene, but they remained there for about 90 minutes while the steam line cooled.
They were able to get the steam line back into a normal operating range, and ensured no further fires resulted from it.
There was little damage, added Chief Armstrong.
In related news, firefighters responded to a fire alarm at an apartment building on the 200 block of Eighth Street West at 6:20 a.m. today.
A resident had left a pot on the stove, then fell asleep on the couch.
The fire alarm went on off, and firefighters responded, awakened the individual, and then cleared the smoke from the building.
No serious damage occurred.
