The number of active fires has dropped to 148, the Ministry of Natural Resources reported late yesterday, which is progress over the several hundred that had been burning as recently as one week ago.
The focus of the ongoing effort is to ensure no further spread on the fires.
Some fires will continue to smoulder for some time to come and fire staff will monitor a number of these until they can be declared out.
Some fires have hose lines and active fire suppression ongoing.
Those fires mostly are concentrated in the districts of Nipigon and Thunder Bay, where lightning ignited hundreds of fires in the region beginning in the first week of September.
Fort Frances District will be conducting an aerial reconnaissance of fires in the district, with most of them located in Quetico Park.
A number of fires currently being monitored could be called out during this next reconnaissance.
In related news, fire bases in the region are working on preparing the forward attack bases for the end of the fire season and winter.
Once again, hunters and people driving through the back roads in the Thunder Bay and Nipigon districts are advised to use care and caution while driving and when discharging a firearm.
Fire personnel continue to monitor fires, use heavy machinery, and continue with fire suppression on a number of the fires still considered active in those districts.
