Forest fire activity and the fire hazard have increased to the point that a planned dispatch of FireRangers to Alberta this week has been cancelled, the Ministry of Natural Resources reported late yesterday.
As well, when the remaining 374 Ontario fire staff in Alberta returns, they will not be replaced there.
The fire hazard currently is “high” in the west portions of the Northwest Fire Region and “extreme” in the rest of it.
One new fire was reported in the region by yesterday evening.
Thunder Bay Fire #33, a lightning-caused blaze located about 20 km northeast of Armstrong, was reported yesterday afternoon.
At last report, it was classified as “not under control” at an estimated 40-60 hectares in size and is receiving both ground and air attack.
There currently are 10 active fires in the region, including two here in Fort Frances District.
Fort Frances Fires #6 and #9, a pair of lightning-cause blazes in the Quetico Provincial Park area, continue to be observed.
