Fire hazard set to jump this week

Staff

The fire hazard currently is “moderate” across the region but sunny, dry weather in the forecast will increase it to “high” today, with high winds tomorrow pushing the hazard higher still, the Ministry of Natural Resources reported yesterday.
By Friday, the hazard in the region could reach “extreme” in the west end and “high” in the east.
Five new fires were reported by yesterday evening in the districts of Dryden, Nipigon, Sioux Lookout, and Thunder Bay.
Four of these were classed as human-caused, with a cause not yet determined in the fifth one.
One new fire was reported in Fort Frances District on Saturday, but it was put “out” after reaching 0.4 hectares in size.
As of press time today, there are 34 active fires in the region, with the majority of them being monitored and showing no fire activity.
All of the active fires in Fort Frances District are located in Quetico Provincial Park, where they are listed as “being observed.”
Hunters are asked to watch for firefighters as they respond to new fires, and people setting outdoor fires are reminded to follow safe burning guidelines.
