Fire destroys college campus in Dryden

Classes at Confederation College here were cancelled Friday after an early-morning fire destroyed the campus in Dryden.
“From people I’ve talked to there, they weren’t able to save anything,” Don Lovisa, local campus manager, said Friday morning.
Lovisa was awakened by a phone call at 5:45 a.m., informing him a blaze at the Dryden campus, located at 221 Government St., had been reported an hour earlier.
Firefighters still were on the scene late Friday morning.
“It impacts all of our campuses because of all the courses that involve videoconferencing,” noted Lovisa. “We had to cancel our classes today. We’re working to find a solution.
“Hopefully, by Monday, we can get our Dryden students to alternate locations,” he added.
Lovisa noted several courses are “shared” classes, whereby classes instructed live here and in Kenora also are broadcast to students at other campuses, including Dryden’s.
Due to the fact firefighters and the Dryden campus manager were on the scene, no other details were available by press time.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
