Fire closes Highway 17

Highway 17 was closed for about six hours yesterday after a semi caught fire near Parker Road in Eton Township, west of Dryden.
At 4:18 p.m., members of the Dryden OPP and Oxdrift and Dryden Fire Services responded to a vehicle fire on the highway.
Upon arrival, a large semi moving trailer loaded with household items was seen on fire in the eastbound lane.
The tractor had been saved after it was detached from the burning trailer.
Due to the intense heat, smoke, and flames, police were forced to close the high for about six hours while firefighters extinguished the blaze.
Police diverted passenger vehicles around the scene via side roads, but all large semi trucks were held back.
Both lanes of traffic were fully re-opened at 10:05 p.m.
Although the fire has been put out, motorists on Highway 17 can expect delays today while the clean-up continues.
Slow down and use caution when passing workers on the highway, the OPP said.
