The Rainy River Field Naturalists will conduct its third-annual garbage pickup this Monday to coincide with Earth Day (April 22).
Club president Bill Morgenstern “will rally the troops” that morning to clean up a stretch of Highway 11 from the second island on the north side of the Causeway east to George Armstrong Drive (but not on the Causeway itself).
“During the cleanup, we try and sort the garbage into recyclables and non-recyclables,” club secretary Henriette Verhoef noted this morning.
The group also considers the cleanup timely with regards to the 11th-annual World Health Organization Conference on Safe Communities coming here May 7-9, said Verhoef.
Two years ago, the club cleaned up at the boat launch on their own. Since then, they have worked with the Rainy River First Nations watershed management team to clean up the riverbank under the “Adopt a River” program.
This year’s cleanup is part of the “Adopt a Highway” program.
