Field naturalists elect new executive

The Rainy River Valley Field Naturalists club elected a new executive at its annual meeting Wednesday night.
Bill Morgenstern was named president of the local group that promotes conservation and wise use of the environment.
Rounding out the executive are Tom Shumaker (vice-president), Gus MacDonell (treasurer), Henriette Verhoef (secretary), and Tara MacEachern (newsletter editor).
Club members also discussed a number of issues last night, including adopting a portion of Highway 11 east of town and organizing outdoor events such as tracking local wildlife populations, Morgenstern said Thursday morning.
“We talked about recycling issues and what we, as a club, can do,” he added.
Morgenstern also said he won’t let the size of their group deter them from making a difference.
“We may be relatively small, 26 members from across the district, but they’re really active members,” he noted.
Morgenstern said the club brings in speakers to their meetings on the first Wednesday of the month, with upcoming topics to include the environment and health issues, bald eagles, and wetland habitat in Rainy Lake.
