For the third-straight year, Knox United Church will host a church fundraiser concert on Mother’s Day (May 11) featuring Canadian fiddling champion Scott Woods.
The concert, slated to begin at 7 p.m. and run for about two hours, is being held to raise money for church-related projects.
Refreshments will follow in McMillan Hall.
Tickets for the show, which cost $15 each, are available at Fort Frances General Supply and Sight & Sound. Only 275 will be sold.
Woods has performed a Mother’s Day concert here the past two years, which have been very well-received, said Bill Gushulak, who is looking after ticket sales.
“The response so far has been favourable,” he noted. “We’re expecting to sell out again.
“It’s been a fun event, and we’ve been able to keep the costs the same as they’ve been for the past two years, which is encouraging.
“It’s a fun evening; a good way to kick off spring,” added Gushulak. “And it coincides with Mother’s Day, so it makes for a great end-of-the-day celebration.
“Go out for dinner with Mom someplace and then treat her out for the evening.”
While it is a church fundraiser, Gushulak stressed the show is by no means limited to members of Knox United Church congregation.
The fast-paced, two-hour concert skillfully combines old-time fiddling with country Gospel songs, perennial favourites, and a generous helping of humour.
Woods, who is backed up by his own four-piece show band, has performed to enthusiastic crowds throughout the world, and has made Fort Frances one of the 30-plus stops on his Western Canada tour.
“He’s very popular anywhere he goes. We can count ourselves quite fortunate that we’re on his list,” said Gushulak.
Woods also will be stopping in Atikokan on May 10. Some Atikokan residents came here in previous years to see him but this year sought Woods to play in their own community.
Woods has captured all the major Canadian fiddling titles, including Canadian Open Fiddle Champion, Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Champion, Canadian Fiddle Entertainer of the Year, Duet Fiddle Champ, and Novelty Fiddle Champion.
As well, Woods has several recordings to his credit, which will be available at the concert here. Fans even should be able to get Woods’ autograph, hinted Gushulak.
