Organizers are expecting 77 couples dressed to the nines tomorrow evening for the annual Fort High prom.
But before the students head to the dinner/dance at La Place Rendez-Vous, parents and others will be checking out the grand march at 5:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.
Doors will open at 5:10 p.m.
“This is our first try at doing it in the gymnasium,” FFHS vice-principal Mary Hickling said this morning.
“Last year we tried it in the Townshend Theatre, and we had to hold two grand marches–once in the theatre and once in the cafeteria for the overflow.”
She also admitted it didn’t move as smoothly as it could have. “Some of the kids forgot their name cards in the theatre so the announcers didn’t know their names when they came out,” said Hickling.
She’s hopeful the gym will work out as a better venue.
“We have two sets of bleachers, and chairs on the floor. And the students have set up a riser with a runway so everyone should get a good view,” she noted.
“This should be much more wonderfully done.”
But Hickling noted that with the hundreds of spectators expected, there was one concern. Vehicles will be ticketed if they park in the fire lanes or drop-off circle in front of the main entrance.
“Last year, we had vehicles lined up,” she remarked.
Motorists can park in the student parking lot, the staff area (behind the school), and the Confederation College lot.
The dinner/dance, which runs from 7 p.m. until midnight, also will feature several door prize draws, including the one for rings at midnight.
Names are automatically entered using name cards from the grand march.
And memories of the special evening can be preserved thanks to In-Focus, which will offer sittings for photos from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Fee is $15, with a $10 fee for any additional individual/group shooting.
Hickling noted parent volunteers have been instrumental in organizing this year’s prom.
