The fire situation in the Northwest Region has started to cool off a little, with the number of blazes on the decline.
There currently are 85 active fires in the region—down from 96 yesterday.
Three active fires continue in Fort Frances District, all of which have been burning in Quetico Provincial Park, as well as one active fire in Dryden District.
But Kenora District has gone from three to two while Thunder Bay District has dipped from eight to seven.
Since fire season officially began April 1, there have been 579 fires, consuming 572,676.5 hectares.
The Ministry of Natural Resources reported that crews continue to make good progress on multiple fires, aided by cooler temperatures and damp conditions.
Fire operations will take advantage of the passing weather event and low fire behaviour to recycle fire personnel and equipment given the long-term forecast calls for the return of dry conditions and above-normal temperatures.
There is at least another three or four weeks of work ahead to ensure existing large fires are put “out,” the MNR noted.
