The forest fire hazard is “low” across the entire Northwest Region, with only a handful of new fires reported over the Labour Day weekend.
One new fire was reported in Sioux Lookout District on Sunday, three new fires in Kenora District and one in Nipigon District on Saturday, and one each in Kenora and Nipigon Districts on Friday evening.
None of these blazes were burning as of this morning.
As well, the number of active fires in the region is dwindling, with just 27 as of this morning.
These include three in Fort Frances District, nine in Nipigon District, four in Red Lake District, eight in Sioux Lookout District, and four in Thunder Bay District, affecting a total of 470,528.7 hectares.
Since the fire season officially began April 1, the region has seen a total of 782 fires, charring 624,465.8 ha in all.
In related news, 60 out-of-province fire personnel remain to support firefighting efforts in the Northwest Region.
The remaining firefighters and overhead staff have come from British Columbia, Alberta, New Brunswick, and Minnesota.
