Fatal collision East of Ignace

(IGNACE, ON) – A collision between three tractor trailer units have left two dead and several others injured.

On August 20, 2020 at approximately 2:30 am officers from the Ignace and Dryden Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 17, Dewan Township, approximately 15 km East of Ignace.
Three tractor trailer units (TTU); two travelling west and one travelling east collided. Two occupants of one of the West bound units were pronounced deceased. The occupants of the other west and east bound tractor trailer units had serious, but non-life threatening injuries and were transported by EMS for treatment.
The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin (NOK).
Ignace Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were on scene to assist with the investigation.
The Traffic Collision Investigation (TCI) unit, including a reconstructionist, attended the scene to conduct their investigation. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
Highway 17 is still closed at this time.
