There will be fun activities for children and their parents to do on the Family Day weekend.
The Rainy Lake Nordic Ski Club is hosting a family ski Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at its Rocky Inlet ski trails.
Whether they’re expert skiers or beginners, families are encouraged to come by and enjoy the great outdoors.
Equipment is available for your use if you don’t have your own, and experienced trail users will be on hand to help.
The event is free but donations to the club are welcome.
Hot dogs, hot chocolate, and a campfire to roast marshmallows will be offered.
There also is a heated chalet in which to warm your bones.
To get there, drive east of town to George Armstrong Drive, turn, and drive for about half-a-kilometre until you get to Rocky Inlet Road.
Then take a left and follow the road for another .8 km.
The chalet and parking area are located on the left-hand side.
Meanwhile, Science North will be at the Fort Frances Public Library with its “Indoor Planetarium” on Monday (Family Day).
This is the first planetarium of its kind in Northern Ontario, and features films about astronomy and other space topics are projected on an 8.4-metre dome.
The digital technologies, surround sound, and special dome screen promises to immerse audiences—taking them through the galaxies to the outer extremities of the known universe billions of light years away.
Kids will be able to learn about the stars, planets, and galaxies through live presentations presented by Science North staff scientists.
They have access to a comprehensive library of scientific data and ready-to-use educational materials, as well as advanced real-time show production tools.
There will be four shows times, each 20 minutes in length (these will be at 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m., noon, and 12:30 p.m.)
Sign up at the library, call 274-9879, or visit library.fort-frances.com for a preferred show time.
Tickets cost $2/person.
The library itself will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Family Day.
Next door at the Memorial Sports Centre, there will be a family skate and family swim on Monday.
The family skate will run from 9:45 a.m.-3:15 p.m. while the family swim will go from 1:15-3:30 p.m.
A parent or guardian must accompany the children on the ice or in the water.
Only immediate family members allowed (one adult for every two children).
Parents pay the daily membership rate ($7.63 for residents or $9.55 for non-residents) while kids don’t.
As well, there will be free skating at “The Duke” (Couchiching Arena) on Family Day.
A free family skate will run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., followed by a free shinny skate for children 12 and under from 1-2:30 p.m.
A free shinny skate for kids 13 and over then goes from 2:30-4 p.m.
