Former Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation chief Gary Allen, currently executive director of Grand Council Treaty #3, has announced his intention to run for AFN Regional Chief for Ontario.
Now a resident of Kenora, Allen is well-known in Grand Council Treaty #3.
A trusted and respected figure in the area, he has been the executive director at Treaty #3 since January, 2015 after being chief at Nigigoonsiminikaaning for four terms starting in 2004.
“I was given tobacco to run for this important position and in order to honour and respect this gift, it means being given the task to work on behalf of and unifying all nations and indigenous peoples within the chiefs in Ontario,” Allen noted.
“My vision is to build strong and unified indigenous nations in Ontario, enabling our present and future generations by respecting each region, and creating wellness, internal capacity, and utilize a collaborative approach to economic development and facilitate the nation-to-nation relationship with Canada and Ontario,” he added.
The election for the AFN Regional Chief will be held at the All-Ontario Chiefs Conference in Nipissing First Nation (North Bay) on June 26-28, at which 133 First Nation leaders will hear from candidates and select a leader on June 27.
Grand Council Treaty #3 is comprised of 28 First Nations in Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba.
