Entry deadline for spring art show coming up

Artists planning to enter the Fine Line Art Gallery’s spring exhibit are reminded to get those paintings or other pieces finished by next Saturday.
Linda Lovisa, with the Fine Line Art Gallery, said Monday that a few entries already have come in for the show, which will run April 4-May 14 and follow the theme “Cup ’n Dish.”
But those who haven’t submitted their work, which may be in any medium (watercolour, oil, stained glass, pottery, etc.), should pick up an entry form at the Fine Line Art Gallery (529 Mowat Ave.) or call 274-1269 before the April 1 deadline.
The entry fee is $10 and the show is limited to one piece per artist.
Lovisa said organizers are expecting about 40 entries in all, and she expects to see a wide variety of interesting interpretations of the theme.
“When Jean [Richards] came up with the idea, everybody hated it,” she laughed. “It’s one of the tougher ones. It’s challenging to make a cup and a dish interesting.”
While the show doesn’t start until April 4, Lovisa said organizers need the art before then as they will be “transforming the entire gallery” and hanging the artwork during the days and nights leading up to it.
Lovisa admitted she has not yet completed her painting for the exhibit. “It’s a work in progress,” she remarked, adding (like most artists) that she won’t reveal her idea before its time.
As in past years, a “Music in the Gallery” event, featuring both music and refreshments, is being planned for the evening of Friday, May 13 to wrap up the “Cup ’n Dish” show, noted Lovisa.
“I’m working on a couple of people right now,” said Lovisa, referring to the musicians booked for the event.
More than 50 works of art—all done in shades of blue, for the most part—were submitted for the “Out of the Blues” show last year. These were done not only by members of the Fine Line co-op, but artists from elsewhere in the region and western Canada.
The 2003 spring art show, entitled “Wild ’n Woolly,” saw everything from a diorama featuring bungee-jumping sheep to wool sweaters to a painting of woolly mammoths submitted.
The inaugural show in 2002 featured works revolving around the theme “Shade of Yellow.”
Both those shows attracted about 40 entries each.
Following the pattern of a colour-themed show one year and a non-colour one the next, the 2006 spring art show will be based on the colour red.
In other news, a “Garden Party Colour & Collage” workshop is slated March 25-26 at the Fort Frances Museum.
This workshop, which runs Friday from 1-4 p.m. and again Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., uses the idea of a “garden party” and the recent “Threadworks” exhibit at the museum as inspiration.
The two sessions will explore collage techniques, paper-making, and painting.
The cost is $25. Call 274-7891 to RSVP.
