Emo walleye classic

The Emo Walleye Classic takes place May 29-31, and there’s sure to be a lot of excitement for anglers, spectators, volunteers, and the many other people who make this tournament a top-notch event.
Sixty teams will set out to fish on Friday and Saturday.
I’ve been told the water level of the Rainy River is up four feet higher in some places than it was last year, with a strong current, so fishermen will have to use a different technique.
The major sponsors of this year’s event are Tompkins Hardware, G3 Boats, Yamaha, Home Satellite, B-93, and the Fort Frances Times.
Three dinners also will be served at the Emo-La Vallee Community Centre during the tournament. Meal tickets can be purchased at The Corner Closet, Meyers Clothing, Tompkins, and Village Variety.
Thursday night will feature a walleye dinner sponsored by the Muskie Girls’ Hockey Team while the spaghetti supper Friday night is sponsored by the Emo Figure Skating Club.
Then on Saturday, the always popular prime rib dinner is sponsored by the Rainy River District 4-H Clubs (only 300 tickets will be sold and they sell out fast).
As well, tickets are being sold for $10 each for $25,955.95 in prizes up for grabs in the raffle.
Monies raised from the tickets will be for Emo Meals on Wheels projects.
Raffle tickets can be purchased up the draw time at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
There will be entertainment both Friday and Saturday evenings, including the annual Emo “Walleyedol” singing contest taking will place on Friday after the weigh-ins (around 7 p.m.)
Come out and cheer on your favourite singer.
Then Yowza will supply the music for a dance Saturday starting at 9 p.m. There will be a $5 admission charge and age of majority is required.
Meanwhile, the weigh-ins—the most exciting part of the the EWC—begin Friday and Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
There seems to be a history of the team that places first one year always places last the following year.
I’m sure Ralph Galusha and Bill Godin (last year’s top winners) are hoping to break that record.

The history book entitled “Connections” (a history of our area) has been discounted to $50. Books are available at the municipal office.
The second edition, “Further Connections,” will be available before Chistmas. It also will sell for $50 each.
Books can be pre-ordered, with cheques being mailed to Freeda Carmody and Joyce Witherspoon here in Devlin, Maxine Hayes at RR#1, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M2, or Liz Donaldson in Emo.
Pre-sale cheques are to be made out to the Township of La Vallee.

The municipal work bee to clean up our four local cemeteries takes place Saturday, June 14 beginning at 9 a.m. It is hoped a lot of people will show up for this worthy project.
A clean-up wasn’t held last year.
Be sure to bring rakes, shovels, and even spades as there are monuments to be straightened.

The Wednesday cribbage games at the Emo Legion last week saw Jerry Allan take the high score while the low went to Ross Brooks. Darlene Bruce won the draw prize.

The Legion’s monthly 50/50 draw was held over the weekend and the lucky winner was Larry Kellar, who pocketed $618.50. Adelia Guba sold the winning ticket.

There will be an “old time” dance at the Emo Legion on Saturday (May 31).
The next Bingo there is set for June 10.

The 500 card games held May 15 at the Emo Legion were won by Jean Bragg and Bob McLean, with the low going to Pat Busch and Bob McLean.
The 500 card games on May 22 saw the high taken by Bob McLean and Aggie Waldeck while the low went to Jim Kellar and Pat Busch.

Devlin TOPS ON3019 held their annual salad supper on Monday (May 26). About 130 people showed up to enjoy the evening of delicious salads—door and raffle prizes were given out.
A lot of visiting and socializing was enjoyed by folks from throughout the district. The TOPS group would like to thank everyone who came out to their yearly fundraiser.

Fort Frances District Association for Community Living will be holding a garage sale on June 7 from 8 a.m.-noon at 990 Scott St. (the former RCMP building).
Monies raised will help in purchasing lawn furniture for the activity centre.
