Emergency kits supplied for patients

The La Verendrye General Hospital Auxiliary, noticing the low quantities of basic amenities in hospitals, has proposed addressing the problem by donating “emergency care packages” to those in need.
On Friday, auxiliary members Marlene McQuarrie (vice-president) and Betty Cox (sick and visiting) made the first donation of many to Karla Rogozinski, a registered nurse on St. Andrew’s Ward.
Hospitals find basic toiletries in short supply when they have to distribute them to the patients in their care.
This is only a minor problem for locals who find themselves in the hospital longer than expected because they can always get a loved one to run home for them.
A much bigger problem is posed for those patients who find themselves being airlifted or transferred out of Fort Frances.
The auxiliary packages are being filled with such amenities as toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, mouthwash, deodorant, tissues, razors, and much more.
Some practical items also will be put in the package, such as slippers, pencils and paper, and calling cards so they are able to keep their loved ones up to date on their condition and situation.
The auxiliary is asking its members, as well as the general public, to bring any of the above items in so they can fill the emergency care packages as soon as possible.
The auxiliary noted shampoos, conditioners, lotions, and soaps from hotels are very handy for this project—and suggest this is an easy and inexpensive way to help out.
As well, since they are hoping to include slippers in the package to warm the patients’ feet on the cold tile floors often found in hospitals, wool is especially welcome so those who are making the slippers are able to craft a myriad of sizes and colours.
The auxiliary is aiming to prepare 150 emergency care kits, which is the recorded average that would be needed per year.
Donations can be left at the hospital gift shop weekdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Or you can contact an auxiliary member for additional information about the kits or how else to donate.
Anyone with questions is welcome to contact Devetta Sheppard (274-4997) or McQuarrie (274-4584).
