Economic development committee to meet council

A list of economic development priorities will be presented to council Monday afternoon by the town’s economic development advisory committee.
The committee, which includes Mayor Glenn Witherspoon and several residents, will discuss projects and budget recommendations to council prior to the committee of the whole meeting.
The meeting will help council select economic development priorities during strategic planning sessions planned for later this month.
The committee is set to begin its presentation at 4 p.m. at the Civic Centre.
Also Monday, the committee of whole will receive an update on the Riverwalk condominium project from CAO Bill Naturkach.
“We’re at 24 of 32—72 percent pre-sold—and we’re scheduling up the tender process and going to be having a stakeholders meeting Nov. 1,” said Naturkach.
During its regular meeting, slated to begin at 6:30 p.m., council will receive two letters of concern about the safety of children crossing the streets near area schools.
One letter—from a teacher at St. Francis—requests more signs and crosswalks while a second letter—from the Walker-MacKenzie School Council—addresses safety concerns for children crossing Keating Avenue.
“If the situation remains unchanged, eventually a child will be struck by a motor vehicle and perhaps killed,” wrote school council chair Lorena Jenks.
Council also will receive a letter from Cam Moorhouse, president of the Rainy Lake Nordic Ski Club, for assistance in establishing a cross-country ski trail system at Rocky Inlet.
The club is seeking funding for trail construction and maintenance equipment as well as use of a backhoe for construction, assistance from the department of parks and recreation, and assistance with production of maps for the trails.
