Hockey hall-of-famer, Liberal MP, and former party leadership candidate Ken Dryden will be dropping by Rainy River District during the first week of September.
The public is invited to attend a “Meet Ken Dryden” barbecue dinner to be held next Thursday (Sept. 3) at 6 p.m. at the Little Beaver Snow Park here.
The evening—to be hosted by former Thunder Bay-Rainy River Liberal MP Ken Boshcoff—will include conversation, a hamburger dinner, remarks by Dryden, and entertainment provided by local musician Mike McCaig.
A limited number of tickets are available, which cost $20 for adults and $15 for students.
Tickets can be purchased at Fort Frances General Supply or by contacting Robin Reed at 274-7296.
For many, Dryden is known for his hockey career and achievements, which saw him play goalie for the Montreal Canadiens from 1971-79—a span where the team won six Stanley Cups.
After just eight years with the NHL, Dryden retired and went on to practise law.
Dryden was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983, the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1984 and again in 2005, as well as the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame in 1999.
In 1984, he was appointed Ontario’s first Youth Commissioner. He also served as president of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Dryden was first elected to Parliament as MP for York Centre in 2004, serving as minister of social development until 2006.
He currently serves as the Liberal Party’s national outreach advisor for poverty and working families.
Dryden also tossed his hat into the ring for the Liberal leadership crown in 2006.
He’s also authored best-selling books, including “The Game,” “Home Game,” “The Moved and the Shaken,” and “In School.”
