Faith Moen, communications/public relations co-ordinator for Community Living Fort Frances and District, is looking for volunteers to take several of its service users to some of the OFSAA games here this week.
“I’m sure there are people who are going to OFSAA who wouldn’t mind taking someone else along,” said Moen, noting the service-users already have purchased their own passes.
“They’re really big hockey fans,” she added.
Moen said when she sat down with the service-users to see what they would like volunteers to do with them, many said they wanted to go to the hockey games.
And while she always is looking for volunteers, she stressed this is a wonderful specific opportunity.
“The volunteer program is meant to promote community involvement,” said Moen, adding the new program will see volunteers doing everyday things with the service-users.
“Everyone is different,” she noted. “Some have tour de Fort passes, others just want to go for coffee, walks, or rides.”
And the rest are hockey fans.
In fact, some of Community Living’s service-users are volunteering to help during OFSAA as greeters and to carry the flag during the opening ceremonies.
Moen said it just would be a really nice gesture for someone already going to the games to donate a bit of extra attention to a guest.
There is a small screening process to become a volunteer, such as a criminal check and an application form to fill out.
Community Living Fort Frances and District offers services and personal care for people in the community with intellectual disabilities.
Anyone who is willing to volunteer their time to take a service-user to an OFSAA game, or to do any general volunteering, is asked to contact Moen at 274-5556 ext. 19.
