Drivers charged

OPP officers investigated a single-vehicle accident on Highway 11 that occurred around 3 p.m. yesterday about six km east of Pearson’s Road.
The driver of a westbound pickup truck lost control of his vehicle, causing it to enter the ditch and roll over.
The driver, a 27-year-old male from Manitou Rapids First Nation, was arrested and charged with impaired driving, operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol level over 80 mg, and breach of probation.
The man was taken to La Verendrye Hospital with what was believed to be serious, life-threatening injuries.
It later was determined his injuries were minor in nature.
He was released from custody and will appear in court May 14.
The highway was closed for several hours as police investigated the accident.
Meanwhile, Fort Frances OPP investigated an accident that occurred at 5:30 a.m. yesterday at the intersection of McIrvine Road and Sixth Street West.
Two occupants in the vehicle received treatment at La Verendrye Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
As a result of the investigation, police arrested and charged a 21-year-old Fort Frances man with impaired driving causing bodily harm, operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol level over 80 mg, and breach of probation.
The man was released from custody and will appear in court May 14.
In other news, the OPP, in conjunction with police services across the province, have kicked off the 2007 spring seatbelt campaign.
Starting today and running until April 30, OPP officers will be highly visible across Rainy River District targeting drivers and passengers who choose not to wear their seatbelts.
During the campaign, officers also will be checking to see that child car seats are being properly used.
A properly-used child seat reduces the risk of injury in a motor vehicle collision by 75 percent, yet as many as 80 percent of child car seats are incorrectly used.
