The Fort Frances Voyageur Lions Club will be holding its annual Drive-Thru Breakfast next Thursday (Sept. 21) at Tim Hortons, with residents invited to come by early and pick up their bag of goodies in support of local children’s activities.
Club members, as well as local volunteers and members of the Fort High Leo Club, will be handing out 250 goody bags, along with Tim Hortons coffee and muffins, beginning at 6:30 a.m.
The suggested donation is $10 per bag, which includes a piece of fruit as well as coupons and gifts from local businesses.
Lions Club members still are approaching local businesses for donations so the exact content of the bags is not known yet.
Last year, people received a water bottle, a breakfast bar, a chocolate bar, pens or pencils, a library bookmark, and other coupons and gifts.
As well, about one in four bags will contain an additional prize, which could be worth anywhere from $5 to about $200.
Last year’s grand prize was a two-night stay in the jacuzzi suite at the Prince Arthur Hotel in Thunder Bay, valued at about $370.
The person who won the prize last year returned it to the Voyageur Lions Club because they had no use for it, said Bill Liggins, one of the event’s organizers.
The club then handed the voucher over to the “Community Chest” so that a local family travelling to Thunder Bay for medical reasons would have a place to stay for free.
“It was from a good cause to a good cause,” Liggins noted.
The drive-thru breakfast raised more than $2,000 last year, which went towards local children’s activities.
This year’s event is expected to run until 9:30 a.m.—or until the bags sell out.
Anyone wishing to volunteer to help pass out bags that morning should contact Jim Martindale (274-7829).
