In what’s become an annual tradition since 2004, the Voyageur Lions Club will be holding its “Drive-Thru Breakfast” next Thursday (Sept. 20) at Tim Hortons, with residents invited to come by early and pick up their bag of goodies in support of local children’s activities.
Club members, as well as local volunteers and members of the Fort High Leo Club, will be handing out 250 goodie bags, along with Tim Hortons coffee and muffins, beginning at 6:30 a.m.
This year’s event is expected to run until 9 a.m.—or until the bags sell out.
The minimum donation is $10 per bag, but some people choose to give more.
Each bag includes a piece of fruit, juice box, a water bottle, a breakfast bar, a chocolate bar, pens, pencils, erasers, and numerous coupons and gifts from local businesses.
As well, about one in every two bags will contain an additional prize, which could be worth anywhere from $5 to more than $300. This could range from a gift card, round of golf, and breadmaker to a Bulova watch.
These extra prizes won’t be in the bag (many won’t fit) but instead are identified by a fluorescent numbered ticket with a Voyageur Lions button pinned to it, which can be redeemed on site for the corresponding prize.
Lions Club members have been approaching local businesses for donations and have seen them be very generous.
“We have all kinds of great things,” said committee chairman Jim Martindale, adding the public can see many of them on display in the window at the former Gabring’s (located next to A Little Off the Top at 220 Scott St.)
“We’ve had wonderful, wonderful support,” added Martindale. “Everyone that’s supported us has continued to support us all the way through.”
The drive-thru breakfast raised about $2,600 last year, which went towards local children’s activities.
For those who’ve never been to it before, Martindale clarified the lineup for the drive-thru breakfast will be different from the regular Tim Hortons drive-thru, although those who go through the latter are more than welcome to make a donation and pick up a goodie bag at the former.
While they do have volunteers lined up, anyone wishing to help pass out bags that morning is welcome to contact Martindale at 274-7829.
