Dr. Spencer set to retire after 38 years Dinner planned to honour him

Riverside Health Care Facilities, Inc. wishes to announce the retirement of Dr. J. A. Spencer, effective Feb. 28.
Dr. Spencer has been the general surgeon at La Verendrye Hospital here since he immigrated to Fort Frances from England in 1968.
“It is with mixed emotion that we announce Dr. Spencer’s resignation,” said Riverside CEO Wayne Woods.
“He has been the foundation of our surgical program and we are extremely grateful and proud of his many accomplishments,” he added.
Robin Wright, chairman of Riverside’s board of directors, echoed these sentiments.
“Dr. Spencer has made significant contributions to health care in Fort Frances, the Rainy River District, and Northwestern Ontario,” he said.
“We are, indeed, fortunate that he chose Fort Frances to make his home and raise his family,” he added. “He will be sincerely missed.”
Some notable highlights of Dr. Spencer’s career include the introduction of laparoscopic surgery in 1992. He designed and manufactured a tool to develop his skills, and teach other surgeons this new and innovative procedure
He also was instrumental in establishing the Northwestern Ontario Regional Surgical Network—commonly known as the RSN—to address the onerous call for a single surgeon in many of the communities in Northwestern Ontario.
The network ensured surgical coverage in these areas.
