After announcing last month that Robin’s Donuts’ downtown location would go smoke-free for the next six months, Guy Donaldson and Kelly Spicer are ready to implement that policy starting Monday.
Donaldson noted he’s gotten much feedback about the initiative up to this point.
“I would think that, for the most part, the comments have been positive,” he said, noting employees have been keeping track of customers’ opinions on the matter.
“But, of course, others are concerned about our well-being, business-wise,” he added. “And other businesses have been supportive. They think it’s a good way to test things.
“You have to remember, this is just a test,” Donaldson stressed.
Robin’s King’s Highway location has been smoke-free since it opened a few years ago.
Donaldson noted a sign stating the downtown site would be trying a no-smoking policy was posted immediately after the April 16 public meeting where he revealed the plan.
“I think customers appreciated that,” he said. “We realize some people might not come back right away, but maybe, eventually, they will.”
He added they’ve taken measures to soften the possible blow to business in the next few months, such as an intensive advertising campaign and promotions, including a contest where customers could win a trip to Mexico.
Donaldson stressed the test period should prove not only crucial in whether Robin’s downtown location decides to go smoke-free permanently, but will provide an example, regardless of outcome, to other businesses considering a similar policy.
“This test period is our commitment to our community,” he had remarked at the April 16 meeting at the Civic Centre.
While Donaldson offered to use the case study to help inform town council on its decision to possibly passing a bylaw prohibiting smoking in all enclosed public places here, council has since stated it likely would decide on the issue before November, when the Robin’s trial period ends.
Shortly after Donaldson’s announcement last month, the Fort Frances Curling Club put a motion on the floor at its semi-annual general meeting last month to become a smoke-free facility effective Nov. 1.
The motion will be put to a vote at the club’s general meeting in September.
