The Fort Frances OPP is reminding commercial vehicle operators that they must abide by local bylaws which state the use of jake brakes is prohibited within town limits.
Police have received a few complaints recently. On several occasions, tractor trailers have been entering from the east end of the community (near the overpass) and using their jake brakes.
As a result, there is a noise that is quite loud and it is disruptive, particularly to the residents living in the area.
Town Bylaw #27/82 (under the noise bylaw) states “the use of truck engine brakes being a device or system that converts a power-producing engine into a power-absorbing retarding mechanism, or its equivalent, commonly referred to as a ‘Jake Brake’ is prohibited in the Town of Fort Frances as the noise disturbs the inhabitants.”
A fine under the noise bylaw is $105.
