The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada has donated from its Humanity Fund to assist victims` families and the communities affected by the tragic accident in Lac-Mégantic this past weekend.
CEP’s Quebec Regional office has also made a donation.
CEP represents several hundred members in the region and president Dave Coles said he is disturbed and heartbroken at the union’s inability to account for some of the union officers from Local 299.
“Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the families of the victims of this horrendous accident,” said Coles.
“In the coming hours and days we will be watching closely for news of other casualties, and do all we can to show our solidarity,” he added.
“Our thoughts are with the families of the victims of Lac-Mégantic,” commented Michel Ouimet, CEP’s executive vice-president (Québec).
“After an accident as tragic as it is sad, we must show total solidarity with our members and the community,” he added.
The CEP is calling on its members across the country to send donations through the Red Cross by calling: 1-800-418-1111 or by visiting www.redcross.ca.
CEP is one of Canada’s largest unions with members working in key industries across Canada, including energy, pulp and paper, telecommunications and media.
