A $100,000 donation to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation will touch more than 97,000 lives this year.
The gift from Musselwhite Mine will support Emergency and Trauma services at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
“Trauma services are of critical importance, not only to our own workforce and their families, but for the entire Northwestern Ontario community,” said Gil Lawson, Musselwhite Mine’s general manager.
“We want to ensure health care is available when it is least expected but most needed,” he stressed.
Glenn Craig, president and CEO of the Health Sciences Foundation, said the donation from Musselwhite Mine supports the continuation of quality emergency care.
“Leading-edge medical equipment, tools, and supplies are vital to emergency care,” he noted. “This $100,000 donation from Musselwhite Mine helps supply them.”
The Health Sciences Centre currently ranks as the busiest emergency department in Ontario. Despite the high demand for service, it also boasts the shortest wait times.
“We are extremely proud of the level of service delivered through our emergency department,” said Ron Saddington, president and CEO of the Health
Sciences Centre.
“Over 97,000 people from across Northwestern Ontario will visit here this year,” he noted. “We are committed to providing each of them with the best care possible.”
“Our goal was to provide a gift that would make the biggest difference to the most people,” Lawson explained.
“We believe this support to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre’s emergency and trauma services achieves that,” he added.
The Musselwhite Mine, operated by Goldcorp Canada Ltd., is located on the southern shore of Lake Opapimiskan, 480 km by air north of Thunder Bay.
The mine employs roughly 700 employees and contractors.
